For Immediate Release….. November 21, 2008—Episcopal Reception of the newly appointed Bishop and Episcopal Supervisor of the AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH to be hosted by the Jamaica Conference of the 16th Episcopal District, Presiding Prelate The Right Reverend Sarah Frances Davis and Episcopal Supervisor of Missions, Mr. Claytie Davis, Jr.

The gathering will take place at the Episcopal Residence of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kingston. The purpose of the event is to formally introduce Bishop Sarah Davis and Supervisor Claytie Davis to local Heads of Churches, organizations, and social agencies, and to begin a dialogue of partnership and solidarity in the work of mission, ministry, education, and outreach initiatives which cross denominational lines. Bishop Davis will address her guests and share the Episcopal Leadership team’s vision and agenda for their 4-year tenure serving in the region, while based in Jamaica.

The AME Church was founded in 1787 by Richard Allen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. In 1912, African Methodism was birthed in Jamaica by Rev. Alphonso Dumar. Since its inception, the AME Church has had a vested interest in education. Of the 28 congregations across 8 parishes island-wide, 11 AME Churches have thriving Basic Schools, and pastors who are trained Educators. Children are encouraged to excel spiritually as they are equipped for leadership in the Church and society through the Young People’s Division of the AME Church. The Youth are exposed at an early age to ministry, missions, community outreach, and social activism both locally and internationally.

The newly assigned Episcopal Leadership team of Bishop Sarah and Supervisor Claytie Davis are American by birth, and come to the 16th District after completion of a successful 4-year term in the 18th Episcopal District in Southern Africa, covering Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland, and Mozambique. They will now oversee approximately 95 churches across the 16th District, which encompasses Suriname-Guyana, the Windward Islands, Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Europe and the host island of Jamaica where they now reside.

The Davis’ have a long-standing commitment of excellence in pastoral ministry, empowerment through education, financial management, international missions, community activism and upliftment of the disadvantaged. In July 2004, Bishop Sarah Davis was historically elected and consecrated as the 126th Bishop in the A.M.E. Church, making her the 3rd female Bishop in the 200+ year history of African Methodism.
